PM do need to clear out deadwood ministers - the earlier the better

This is comments on Ross Fitzgerald's "Front benches need new faces", The Australian, 7/05/2009, http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,25439459-7583,00.html. Some small changes were made.

I have not paid enough attention to how most ministers have performed, but the Treasurer, the minister for defence, the minister for communication and the minister for climate change have caught my eyes.

I agree that the Treasurer and the minister for climate change have performed so poorly that they should have the wisdom and courage to resign from their ministry, or be sacked. The government's management of the economy and the budget has been a sham and can't not possibly get any worse. Anyone would be able to do a better job than the current Treasurer. Similarly, the minister for climate change has turned the government's climate change strategy, if there has any sensible one, into a total mess and debacle. The minister for communication is likely to have been the champion in the government ministers' worst performers. What a drama and nightmare the government has got in terms of the national broadband network! But the story has not ended, unfortunately for Australians, more than $40 billions of potential economic waste lies still ahead!

On the other hand, although the defence minister got seriously bruised over the issue of the sponsored trips to China, his performance in his portfolio was not too bad. He should be given the opportunity to finish the difficult task of reforming the defence portfolio. That has been an area of huge waste with little accountability, purely because of the public’s lack of understanding of many issues related to defence.

So Mr PM, in your own interest as well as that of the nation, you should act to clear out deadwoods from your ministries. The sooner, the better, for you cannot hide incompetent ministers from the public eyes if they are in the front bench.
